Bag thickness in micron

A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre. More thickness means a stronger bag, but more weight and a higher price. The goal is the lowest thickness that does the job.

Typical ranges

  • HDPE: about 12–30 micron, for supermarkets and restaurants.
  • LDPE: from about 15 micron for light covers to 80 for heavy bags.

What decides the right thickness

  • Load weight: one food box differs from a supermarket shop.
  • Edges: sharp items need LDPE or more thickness.
  • Shape: a large bag needs more thickness than a small one for the same load.
  • Look: gloss and softness for gift and fashion bags.

Effect on price

Pricing is per kilo. Every extra micron adds weight per bag, so fewer bags per kilo. The calculator in Design your bag shows the approximate count as you change it.

The easy way

Send us a sample of your current bag or tell us what goes in it, and we propose the thickness. For printed orders we approve the design with you before production.

Common questions

How do I know my current bag's thickness?

Send us a sample and we measure it, or describe the use and we propose.

Is thicker always better?

No. The best is the lowest thickness that carries the load; extra adds weight and cost with no benefit.

Do you check thickness?

Yes, our quality check covers thickness, size and print clarity.
